A Tale of Three Full Moons: Michael Jackson
I've always been fascinated by lunation cycles, not least because I was born on the day of a Total Lunar Eclipse!
Whatever controversies surround Michael Jackson, few would deny he was an extraordinarily gifted performer and commercially the most successful singer of all time.
So what in his natal chart indicates this enormous talent and under what transits was he propelled to mega stardom? Three Full Moons played a huge part!
Michael Jackson's natal Full Moon
Jackson's chart is remarkable because he was born on the day of a Full Moon in Pisces, but surprisingly I haven’t seen a lot of analyses highlighting this, even though it’s THE defining feature of his chart!
A key to interpreting New/Full Moons and Eclipses is to see which planets and points are activated by the luminaries.
In the Full Moon of Jackson’s birth, the Sun was part of a massive stellium straddling Virgo and Leo, including Pluto, Mercury, Venus and Uranus too!
Below shows his natal chart (August 29, 1958, 7.33pm, Gary, Indiana, USA, A-rated in Astrodatabank):
Since both the Sun and Moon lie across his Ascendant-Descendant axis, he was literally the very embodiment of this Full Moon!! Whatever potential this Full Moon carried, he personified it.
In what way? How?
The Moon in Pisces conjunct his Ascendant shows a natural receptivity to the world of imagination, music and dance. This is combined with the creativity for details, precision, craftsmanship and an endless pursuit of perfection through hard work (Sun in Virgo).
Pluto in Virgo adds magnetic charisma and transformative power, enabling him to reinvent himself from child prodigy into mature artist. Together with Mercury, Venus, and Uranus in Leo, this energy channels into electrifying music and dance. It also indicates the potential to become IMMENSELY and INSANELY popular in showbiz.
This was his natal potential for massive success. When and how was it triggered? By another Full Moon!
Full Moon right after "Thriller"
His album "Thriller", released on November 29, 1982, remains the best-selling album of all time. An estimated 70 million copies have been sold worldwide and guess what, it was released just ONE DAY before a Full Moon in Gemini!
Below shows his natal chart (inner wheel) and that 1982 Full Moon as transits (outer wheel, set for Los Angeles where he was residing):
When a lunation chart is analyzed as transits to a natal chart, I’ll look at IF and HOW the luminaries aspect natal planets, points and angles.
In this case, even if we use only tight orbs (3 degrees for all major aspects), the 1982 Full Moon squared Jackson’s Sun and his Ascendant-Descendant, meaning his natal Full Moon was ignited too!! How fascinating! And it was this album that turned him into the biggest star EVER in the entertainment industry.
Lunation Cycle and Album Sales
In the lunation cycle, the Full Moon represents the "peak" and "climax", with the rest of the cycle like a kind of "winding down": In Jackson’s case, he did climb to the top with "Thriller" which was his second solo album as an adult after "Off the Wall" in 1979.
Although he would go on to release four more studio albums before his death in 2009, sales with each subsequent release would decline, one lower than the last.
Moreover, none of those four albums would be released near to a New Moon/Full Moon again, except for "Dangerous", released on November 21, 1991, exactly on the day of a Full Moon in Taurus 29°07’!
"Dangerous" Full Moon: Physical Transformation
This 1991 Full Moon didn’t really aspect his natal Full Moon, but it did fairly tightly aspect his Pluto in Virgo, with an applying, out-of-sign square of 3°01’.
The inner wheel below is his natal chart and the outer wheel is the Full Moon set for California’s Santa Ynez (which is the town closest to his residence then, the Neverland ranch):
Fittingly, by the time of this album, Jackson’s skin tone had lightened so much that he looked practically like a white man. After all, this Full Moon squared his 6th-house Pluto in Virgo which was opposite his Asc, indicating dramatic changes to appeareance!
I think his transformation in physical appearance throughout the years was no less extraordinary than his music…
Last But Not Least…
Michael Jackson was a global phenomenon, so what else was "born" around the time of his birth on August 29, 1958?
Answer: The world’s first instant noodles!!
Japan’s Momofuku Ando invented instant noodles after years of experimentation and they finally went on sale on August 25, 1958, just four days before Jackson’s birth! If Jackson revolutionized music and dance, instant noodles revolutionized food culture by making cooking faster and more convenient.

There was, in fact, a fourth pivotal Full Moon in Jackson's life, and it wasn't an ordinary one. It was a Lunar Eclipse, occurring on July 7, 2009 at Capricorn 15°24' — the very day of his funeral!!
That Eclipse formed tight soft aspects with his Moon, while also in minor hard aspects with his Pluto. Astrologically, it’s truly remarkable: He entered the world under a Full Moon, and his life’s final chapter was marked by a Lunar Eclipse! That alone is the stuff of legend.
